Environmental consciousness is on the rise and new products are being launched every day to promote the "reduce, re-use and recycle" creed.

Reducing one's environmental impact by practicing greener lifestyle habits is becoming more readily embraced as scientific studies are showing the true ramifications that our actions have on the earth. Green living tips and resources abound as this information comes to light making it easier and less costly to bring these ideas into our homes and offices.

Five Eco-friendly Options to Plastic

Plastic is perhaps one of the most notorious offenders to the green movement. Because it can be used to create a number of products and is lightweight and durable, it is widely used all over the world. The concerns for its use suggests possible health and environmental hazards due to chemical make up and slow biodegradability. The following list contains easy options to assist in forging a green path.

 • Replace plastic water bottles with stainless steel or BPA free water bottles. Plastic bottles have been linked with numerous potential health risks not to mention the dramatic carbon footprint. they leave behind.
 • Use a cloth shower curtain in the bathroom instead of standard liners. A cloth shower curtain should be machine washable and durable.
 • Keep recycled tote bags in the vehicle for shopping purposes. Plastic bags congest landfills, end up in the ocean waters, and take a long time to degrade. If using plastic bags, return them to the store for recycling.
 • Look for eggs and other products in cardboard packaging instead of styrofoam.
 • Cover microwaveable foods for heating with unbleached natural coffee filters instead of plastic wrap which can leach harmful chemicals into food.

Make a Positive Impact on the Environment

Green living can cost less while saving the environment. Buy cheese in bulk instead of individually wrapped slices and yogurt in large containers instead of personal size cups. Purchasing foods in bulk at natural food stores and farmer's markets further reduces the plastic burden on the environment. Even something as simple as taking a stainless steel travel mug to the coffee shop instead of getting styrofoam or cardboard cups with plastic covers can have a positive impact.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

It is important to reduce the amount of material that goes into landfills, reuse items whenever possible and recycle those materials that can be. Buying fresh produce instead of that in plastic lined cans, using non-toxic cleaning products and replacing plastics with more sustainable products can all effect a positive change in the environment. The Earths' inhabitants can also feel better knowing they have chosen a green path to a healthier world.

I thought I was doing all I needed to do, but it looks like there is always room for improvement. Back to a fabric shower curtain it is! Good tip also about the coffee filters for microwave use.

Shirley a great article! I have always thought it crazy how so many 'green people' use plastic water bottles. We have 4 of those stainless bottles - one for each in my family - not only is it better for the environment it is more economical and tastes better. I look forward to reading more great advice. Now I need to do all your other green improvements though!

Very informative!!

In recent times, the world is becoming cognizant about the hazardous effects of plastic bags on the environment.
Also PLA has been used to line the inside of Paper Cups in place of the oil based lining more commonly used, create Plastic ( bioplastics ) Cups, Cutlery, Carrier Bags, Food Packaging and even Nappies.
Thanks,
