For those who love the outdoors and live in or want to visit the North Country, Maine whitewater rafting may be just the ticket for an adventure of a lifetime.

White water rafting in Maine can be as calm and serene as a gentle float trip down parts of the lower Kennebec River to an exciting adrenaline-filled adventure of a lifetime while experiencing up to class IV and V rapids on the upper Kennebec, Penobscot or Dead Rivers. Rafting excursions are offered from late April to October and are available for those as young as age 8 up to seniors. One does not have to be physically fit to experience white water rafting, nor be able to swim, although participants should always be prepared to get wet !

Tips On Planning a Maine Whitewater Rafting Trip

Before heading out in search of the river rapids, it's important to research the rivers and the white water outfitters that coordinate rafting trips. Just as with the ocean, it's a wise person who keeps a healthy respect for the water and the importance of having some basic knowledge on what to expect.

  • Learn about white water rafting if you've never done it. Talk to other people about their experience, read information provided on websites on Maine whitewater rafting, and consult with the rafting experts at the outfitters.
  • Decide what level of challenge you can, and want, to engage in. For instance, if physical issues exist, float trips may be a wise option depending on the degree of disability.
  • Determine if you want to participate in the adventure on your own or share the experience of white water rafting with a group of your own choosing such as co-workers or family members. Group rates are offered by most Maine whitewater rafting companies.
  • Know the risks involved. River guides are experts in their profession, but the nature of the sport is volatile and carries some risk. All participants are informed of the risks and inherent dangers and are required to sign a waiver of liability.
  • Listen to what the outfitters advise. They will tell you what you need to wear and bring for your rafting adventure.
  • Consider choosing a white water rafting trip that includes an overnight stay and dinner. Nothing compares to warming up by a campfire and a hot meal after a day on the river.
  • Never drink or do drugs on a Maine whitewater rafting trip. This is a group endeavor and everyone works together. Alcohol and drug use endangers everyone. Outfitters reserve the right to deny participation at any time.
  • Realize that the best time to go rafting in Maine is up to the individual. Spring is a perfect time for the high waters and seeing moose, summer offers warmer air and water temperatures, and fall is the time for spectacular autumn foliage viewing.

How Long Does a Raft Trip Take and What Does it Cost?

A Maine whitewater rafting trip is a full day venture for the river trip alone. Most begin around 7:30 AM with an orientation and provision of safety gear and end between 3 and 4 PM before dusk. Expect to pay upwards of $150.00 per person as of 2010. Group rates and special package rates are available at most white water outfitters.
